Spanish authorities suspect that excessive speed may have played a role in the tragic car accident that took the lives of Liverpool and Portugal forward Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva.
The 28-year-old footballer and his 25-year-old brother were killed when their Lamborghini veered off the road in Zamora, Spain, on Thursday.
According to the BBC, the Spanish Civil Guard has indicated that early findings suggest the vehicle was traveling above the legal speed limit of 120 km/h (75 mph) at the time. While the investigation is still ongoing, officials also believe a tyre blowout might have caused Jota to lose control of the high-performance car.
Authorities Provide Update on Jota’s Crash
For the first time since the fatal crash, police have confirmed their belief that Diogo Jota was the one driving the vehicle. A spokesperson for the Civil Guard explained: “The technical report is nearing completion, and investigators are analyzing, among other things, the marks left by one of the vehicle’s wheels. All evidence currently points to a significant speeding violation, and preliminary tests suggest that Diogo Jota was behind the wheel.”
Jota’s sudden death has deeply affected the football community, as he was widely admired both for his skill on the pitch and his character off it.
