The reason Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté avoided a red card during their Champions League clash with PSG has now been explained.
On Wednesday night, Liverpool faced Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 tie.
Early in the game, Konaté sparked controversy with a last-ditch challenge that many felt warranted a red card. However, the explanation for why the French defender remained on the pitch has now emerged.
As Liverpool struggled against PSG’s early pressure, a cross reached winger Bradley Barcola just outside the box in a dangerous position. Konaté intervened with a last-ditch tackle using his shoulder, a move that some believed should have resulted in his dismissal.
After a two-minute VAR review, officials chose not to send Konaté off, concluding there was no clear and obvious error. While VAR deemed the challenge a bookable offense, the video assistant referee cannot recommend a yellow card, and the foul was not considered serious enough for a straight red. As a result, Konaté was not penalized.
