Liverpool are making a ‘solidarity’ payment to Newcastle United as part of the transfer deal to sign Alexander Isak. But what exactly is a ‘solidarity’ payment?
After months of speculation, Liverpool have finally agreed to sign Isak from Newcastle.
Despite achieving his dream move to Anfield, Isak is expected to miss out on millions. The total deal is a record-breaking £130 million, surpassing Chelsea’s £106 million signing of Enzo Fernandez in January 2023.
Included in the deal is a £5 million ‘solidarity’ payment.
This £5 million is allocated to clubs that played a role in Isak’s development and training between the ages of 12 and 23.
As a result, Swedish club AIK, Dutch side Willem II, German club Borussia Dortmund, and Spanish team Real Sociedad will each receive a portion of the payment.
Newcastle might also receive part of this payment since Isak joined them at age 22.
Isak started his career at AIK, rising through their youth system before joining Dortmund. While at Dortmund, he was loaned to Willem II in the Netherlands.
He then signed with Real Sociedad in 2019 before transferring to Newcastle for £63 million.
During his time at Newcastle, Isak scored 62 goals in 109 appearances, including 23 goals in 32 Premier League matches last season.
With Liverpool’s attacking strength, Isak is expected to score even more this season, although he has missed the first three league games.
He did not play in Newcastle’s pre-season and hasn’t appeared in their first three league matches this season.
However, he has been called up to Sweden’s squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo.
He may get some playing time before officially joining Liverpool, who will resume their league campaign against Burnley on September 14.
Liverpool have won all three of their opening league games this season.
