Beñat Turrientes of Real Sociedad has shared his long-standing admiration for Liverpool.
The 22-year-old midfielder spoke to the Spanish media about various topics, including his special connection to Liverpool. Turrientes, born in Beasain, Spain, came up through Real Sociedad’s youth system and joined their first team in 2021. Despite spending his entire career at the La Liga club, Liverpool holds a special place in his heart.
Turrientes explained that his admiration for Liverpool stems from his father, who was a big fan of the club. “Yes, special, I have always said that my father really liked Liverpool. In fact, he watched Xabi Alonso’s final match there against Milan,” he said.
“My father would play the Liverpool anthem for my sister and me, and we always watched their games at home. It’s nice that Xabi played there and gave me the same love for the club that my father instilled in me from a young age.”
His father’s connection to Liverpool deepened when his friend, Pako Ayestarán, was Rafael Benítez’s assistant at the club from 2004 to 2007. “My father was part of Pako Ayestarán’s circle, who was once Rafa Benítez’s assistant,” Turrientes explained. “When I was born, he told me about his friend who was an assistant coach. He often went to matches and got tickets, so he played the songs for me and we watched the games, and that’s where my affection for the club comes from.”
Unfortunately, Turrientes never had the chance to visit Anfield with his father during those years.
Liverpool fans may hope that Turrientes can help persuade his Real Sociedad teammate, Martín Zubimendi, to choose them over other clubs if he decides to leave the Spanish side, with recent reports suggesting Zubimendi could depart at the end of the season.
