Wayne Rooney has been suggested as a candidate to join Manchester City to “learn” from Pep Guardiola following his challenging stint as Plymouth Argyle manager.
Rooney was dismissed from his position at Plymouth last month after the team’s 2-0 loss to Oxford United, leading to speculation about his next move in football.
Pundit Don Goodman believes the former Manchester United and England star could benefit from a role at Manchester City under Guardiola’s mentorship. He pointed to the successes of Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca, who worked under Guardiola before becoming managers of Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively.
“I recall him joking about going to Manchester City to learn from Pep Guardiola,” Goodman told Plejmo. “It might sound amusing, but when you see what Arteta and Maresca gained from that experience, it’s not the worst idea.”
However, Goodman acknowledged that such a move is unlikely. He added, “Perhaps Wayne and his family might take some time off, especially with Coleen having just been in the jungle. He was excellent as a pundit during the Euros, and many would enjoy seeing him do that again. Still, I suspect he’ll want a hands-on role in football.”
Goodman also expressed sympathy for Rooney, noting that all of his managerial roles have been particularly challenging.
“I do feel for Wayne Rooney,” he said. “At Derby County, he dealt with administration and points deductions. In the MLS with D.C. United, it didn’t go as planned. Birmingham City was a tough situation after John Eustace’s departure, and Plymouth Argyle faced the immense challenge of Championship survival with limited resources. Each of these roles has been incredibly tough.”
Since retiring from his legendary playing career, Rooney has managed Derby County, D.C. United, Birmingham City, and Plymouth Argyle, often under difficult circumstances. His next step in football remains uncertain.
