Virgil van Dijk’s agent reportedly offered him to a top European club, but the proposal was turned down, according to surprising reports.
Van Dijk’s future has been the subject of intense transfer rumors, as his current contract with Liverpool expires at the end of the season. He is still in negotiations with the club over a potential renewal, with Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold also in similar situations.
As he enters the final six months of his contract, Van Dijk is free to speak to foreign clubs. According to Spanish outlet Relevo, his representatives reached out to Real Madrid, expressing the defender’s interest in joining the club in the summer of 2025. However, the proposal was rejected by Real Madrid, who cited concerns over Van Dijk’s “age” and “condition.”
The 33-year-old has been at Liverpool since January 2018, following his £75 million move from Southampton. This season, he has been in strong form, making 25 appearances across all competitions as Liverpool competes on multiple fronts.
After Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United, Van Dijk was asked about his contract situation and responded: “Nothing.” When asked if he expected an update soon, he replied: “I don’t think so, but I am calm about it, as I said months ago. We’ll see what happens in the future, but right now I’m focused on the team and the Spurs game on Wednesday.”
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has downplayed concerns about Van Dijk’s contract situation, emphasizing that the defender’s performances have not been affected.
“The contract situation becomes an issue only if players are not performing well, but all three [Van Dijk, Salah, and Alexander-Arnold] are doing great,” Slot said in November. “Virgil is having ongoing discussions with the relevant people, and that’s not me. He’s completely right that he doesn’t know what his future holds if he hasn’t signed the contract yet.”
