Cameras inside Anfield captured Virgil van Dijk’s motivational speech to his Liverpool teammates ahead of their Premier League clash against Manchester United.
On Sunday afternoon, Arne Slot’s Liverpool team had an opportunity to widen their lead at the top of the Premier League table to eight points with a victory over their rivals. However, the match ended in a 2-2 draw, with United proving the stronger side throughout. As a result, Liverpool’s lead over second-placed Arsenal was reduced to six points.
Days after the game, Liverpool shared an “Inside Anfield” video on their YouTube channel, showing Van Dijk addressing the team before kickoff. The Dutch captain said: “It’s always going to be tough today, boys, but we all know that we have prepared. Let’s go.”
Despite the preparation, Liverpool struggled in the match, dropping two crucial points in their quest for the Premier League title. Reflecting on the game, Van Dijk expressed disappointment and addressed suggestions of disrespect toward United. He said, “Do I feel United were disrespected? Yeah. I heard someone in the press conference ask if we were going to rotate players against United. I was shocked. This is one of the biggest games of the season.”
Van Dijk acknowledged United’s quality, adding, “They have good players and are a work in progress, just like we are. They made it difficult for us. It could have been worse—they had a big chance at the end. I’m disappointed to drop points at home, but we move on.”
Liverpool will look to bounce back on Wednesday night when they face Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup semi-final.
