Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk is reportedly in discussions about a potential summer departure from Anfield.
On Saturday, Van Dijk led the Reds to a crucial 2-0 victory over Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium, with two late goals from under-pressure striker Darwin Núñez securing the win. The result extended Liverpool’s lead at the top of the Premier League table to six points, as Arsenal faltered against Aston Villa at home.
Despite Liverpool’s strong start under new manager Arne Slot, concerns are growing among fans over the unresolved contract situations of key players. Van Dijk, Mohamed Salah, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all in the final months of their contracts and, as things stand, could leave on free transfers in the summer.
Reports suggest Van Dijk’s representatives have met with a club president to discuss a possible transfer.
According to The Mirror, Van Dijk’s agent recently met with Fahad bin Nafel, president of Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, in London. The report indicates that Al-Hilal is eager to secure Van Dijk’s signature ahead of the Club World Cup in the U.S., though it acknowledges the move seems unlikely given Van Dijk’s prominent role in Liverpool’s title push.
Meanwhile, Salah has also been linked with a lucrative move to the Middle East, and Alexander-Arnold is reportedly a top target for Real Madrid.
Last month, Van Dijk addressed speculation about his future, saying:
“I love the club, the club loves me. I love the fans, the fans love me, and it’s a great foundation for success. I believe I can play at the highest level for another three or four years at least. We’ll see what the future holds.”
Liverpool’s next match is on Tuesday night, where they face Lille in the UEFA Champions League.
