Liverpool fans have learned to be cautious after past Premier League title races, but after this weekend, their confidence seems well justified.
Following Arsenal’s home defeat to West Ham on Saturday, all eyes were on the Reds to see if they could capitalize against Manchester City. They delivered in style, securing a dominant 2-0 victory.
Sky Sports co-commentator Gary Neville described it as “a title-winning performance,” and Liverpool’s composed, clinical display at the Etihad had the aura of champions.
Liverpool Fans Break Into Title-Chant
With the win sealed in stoppage time, the traveling Liverpool supporters erupted into a chant not heard all season.
Knowing their team was about to go 11 points clear at the top, they confidently sang: “Now you’re gonna believe us, we’re gonna win the league!”
Can Liverpool Be Caught?
While the gap isn’t as large as the 16-point lead they held when the same chant rang out at Anfield against Manchester United in January 2020, Liverpool haven’t been in such a commanding position since their last title-winning season.
Recent setbacks against Everton and Aston Villa had raised some concerns, but when Arsenal presented an opportunity to pull away, Arne Slot’s side took full advantage.
Despite City having twice as many shots and nearly double the possession (per Sofascore), Liverpool remained in control throughout. Apart from an Omar Marmoush goal that was ruled out for offside, they never looked in danger.
The title race isn’t over yet, but as the away end belted out “we’re gonna win the league” in stoppage time, few would argue against it.
