Trent Alexander-Arnold’s agent has reportedly engaged in discussions with another club despite his expected move to Real Madrid.
Since the start of the 2024/25 season, speculation about Alexander-Arnold’s future has been widespread, with his contract set to expire at the end of the campaign. In recent months, reports have suggested that Real Madrid has made the English right-back a top transfer target.
Earlier this week, claims emerged that his transfer to the Spanish capital was nearing completion. However, according to Spanish outlet AS, Alexander-Arnold’s agent has also held talks with Madrid’s arch-rivals, Barcelona.
Journalist Sique Rodríguez told SER Catalunya: “There have been meetings, both recently and in previous years, to explore the possibility of Alexander-Arnold joining Barcelona. He was already on Barça’s radar under Xavi Hernández and Jordi Cruyff, with discussions taking place about a potential signing.”
Despite this interest, Barcelona and Alexander-Arnold have not reached an agreement, and the 26-year-old now appears set to join Real Madrid.
Interestingly, Alexander-Arnold previously expressed admiration for Barcelona. In a 2020 interview with GQ, he named the Catalan club as one of his favorite teams, stating: “Besides Liverpool, it would be Barça. I feel they share similar values and beliefs with Liverpool. They focus on developing academy players. I grew up watching Messi and that special Barcelona team with Iniesta, Xavi, Henry, and Eto’o.”
Reacting to the potential transfer, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher shared his disappointment on the Stick To Football podcast, produced by Sky Bet. He said: “As a local player and a Liverpool fan, I’m disappointed he doesn’t see this as the place to stay. Liverpool are competing for the league and the European Cup every year. If I were in his position, I’d be thinking about helping the club match Manchester United in league titles and then pushing ahead over the next seven or eight years.”
