Trent Alexander-Arnold has officially joined his close friend Jude Bellingham at Real Madrid. Though it now feels like a distant memory, there was once a real chance the duo could have ended up playing together at Liverpool.
Back in the 2022/2023 season, Liverpool’s midfield was visibly worn out, and Bellingham—then a rising star for both Borussia Dortmund and the England national team—was heavily rumored to be heading to Anfield. His growing friendship with Alexander-Arnold, which blossomed during the FIFA World Cup, only fueled the speculation.
However, Liverpool ultimately decided to pursue a broader midfield rebuild rather than commit to Bellingham’s high transfer fee.
Fast forward to now, and the speculation has come full circle—Alexander-Arnold has made the move to Real Madrid for $13.5 million (£10 million), just weeks before the expiration of his Liverpool contract.
Real Madrid is clearly thrilled with the signing and the reunion of the English pair. The club shared a nostalgic photo on Instagram of the two players doing their signature handshake celebration. Alexander-Arnold responded with a handshake emoji, while Bellingham, who’s been with Madrid for two years, showed his approval by liking the post.
In his farewell message, Alexander-Arnold expressed heartfelt gratitude to Liverpool and its fans:
“To get the reception I did means everything. I’ve played hundreds of games for this club, but today I felt the most loved. I hope the fans understand how much effort I gave. I thought about this club every second—from the age of six until now. Two decades have flown by, and I’ve cherished every moment, through all the highs and lows.
Coming up through the academy, breaking into the first team, and becoming a part of its fabric—it’s been an incredible honor.”
The 26-year-old was visibly emotional on the Anfield pitch, admitting,
“It hasn’t quite sunk in yet—it’s all I’ve ever known. Sometimes I catch myself thinking I’ll be back next season, but then reality hits. Everything’s changing.
I’ll treasure these memories forever—especially today. It’s been the best day of my life. A truly unforgettable experience and a proud moment for me, the team, and the club.”
