Transfer news LIVE: Carrick announcement at Man Utd close, Gallagher set for Spurs medical, European giants monitor Guehi
The January transfer window is moving quickly, with speculation continuing to intensify across Europe.
Michael Carrick has agreed to take charge of Manchester United as interim manager until the end of the season. Elsewhere, Conor Gallagher is due to complete his Tottenham medical today ahead of a £35 million move from Atletico Madrid. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich remain determined to land Marc Guehi, despite competition from Manchester City and Liverpool.
Rooney open to United return
Wayne Rooney has thrown his support behind Michael Carrick, insisting he can help restore Manchester United’s identity — and admitting he would be willing to assist if called upon.
United were closing in on appointing Carrick, 44, as caretaker boss last night, and club legend Rooney has made it clear he would welcome a role on the coaching staff.
“The club has lost its identity and that family feeling,” Rooney said. “This is a chance to bring that back — to restore the spirit of Manchester United.”
Asked whether he would work alongside his former teammate, Rooney added: “Absolutely — it’s a no-brainer. I’m not asking for a job, but if I was invited, of course I’d help.”
Man United monitoring Llorente
Manchester United are reportedly keeping tabs on Atletico Madrid midfielder Marcos Llorente as they look to strengthen their midfield options this month. Ruben Neves of Al-Hilal is also on their shortlist, with Atletico believed to value Llorente at around £30 million.
Dier considering Premier League return
Eric Dier could be set for a return to English football, with West Ham weighing up a potential move. The defender is currently contracted to Monaco until 2028, and while talks are not advanced, he is viewed as a possible solution for the struggling Hammers.
Bayern still chasing Guehi
Bayern Munich are refusing to abandon their pursuit of Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi. Reports suggest Bayern and Manchester City could attempt a move this month, while Liverpool are monitoring the situation ahead of a possible free transfer in the summer.
Gallagher set for Spurs medical
Conor Gallagher is flying into London today to complete his medical ahead of a move to Tottenham. Spurs dramatically hijacked Aston Villa’s deal for the England midfielder on Monday.
Villa had reached a verbal agreement with Atletico Madrid over a loan deal with a future purchase option, but Tottenham stepped in with a £35 million permanent offer, which Atletico accepted.
The 25-year-old will miss Atletico’s Copa del Rey match against Deportivo tonight and is expected to sign a five-and-a-half-year contract with Spurs.
The deal comes as a major boost for Thomas Frank, who recently lost Rodrigo Bentancur to a serious hamstring injury. Gallagher has been on Tottenham’s radar for some time, with previous interest dating back to 2023, while former boss Ange Postecoglou also pushed hard for his signing.
During his 18 months at Atletico, Gallagher made 51 La Liga appearances, though many came from the bench. A return to the Premier League could boost his chances of forcing his way into Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup plans.
Tottenham currently sit 14th in the league but are only six points behind fifth-placed Brentford.
Spurs beat Villa to Gallagher
Tottenham now appear set to beat Aston Villa to Gallagher’s signature. Villa had hoped to secure him on loan with an obligation to buy, but Spurs moved quickly with a £34 million-plus bid. Crystal Palace were also monitoring the situation but favoured a loan deal rather than a permanent move.
