Tottenham approach club legend over managerial return as plan to sack Thomas Frank is confirmed.

Tottenham have reportedly contacted a legendary figure in football about becoming their next permanent manager after highly trusted journalist David Ornstein confirmed it is now a case of “when, not if” Thomas Frank is dismissed.

Frank’s spell in north London has been widely viewed as deeply disappointing, and Ornstein delivered the latest update while speaking on NBC Sports. He revealed that supporters have turned against the Dane, with large sections of the club’s hierarchy also losing faith in him. Discontent has also spread through the squad, with several players unhappy under his leadership. While Ornstein admitted a dramatic turnaround is still technically possible, he stressed that Frank staying in the long term is considered highly unlikely.

Both Ornstein and insider Fraser Fletcher have indicated that Frank is still expected to take charge of Tottenham for their Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night. Beyond that fixture, however, his future remains uncertain, with serious attention already shifting toward potential replacements.

Recently appointed coach John Heitinga is viewed as a leading option to step in on an interim basis if a change is made. Meanwhile, Spanish outlet Fichajes reports that Tottenham have set their sights high by exploring a move for former Barcelona manager and legendary midfielder Xavi.

According to the report, both Manchester United and Tottenham have made enquiries about Xavi’s availability. However, Fabrizio Romano has suggested United are prioritising candidates with Premier League experience, something Xavi lacks. That could open the door for Spurs, with the 45-year-old actively seeking a return to management after leaving Barcelona in 2024. It has also been reported previously that Xavi is keen on working in the Premier League and has been improving his English.

Assessing the situation, Fichajes stated that Tottenham believe it is time to consider alternative managerial profiles due to poor results and inconsistent performances. Xavi’s ability to build medium-term projects and develop young players is said to appeal strongly to the club’s long-term philosophy. Internally, his name is gaining support as an ambitious option, despite concerns over his lack of experience in English football.

Elsewhere, The Independent recently revealed that Tottenham have also explored the possibility of appointing Xabi Alonso following his departure from Real Madrid. Oliver Glasner, Andoni Iraola and former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino have also been discussed as potential candidates.

Glasner is expected to remain at Crystal Palace until the end of the season despite growing tension, while Iraola is not anticipated to leave Bournemouth mid-season. Pochettino, meanwhile, is focused on preparing the United States for a home World Cup.

If Frank is removed in the coming weeks, Tottenham could follow a similar path to Manchester United by installing an interim manager until the summer before appointing a permanent head coach — unless they decide to move quickly for a currently available candidate such as Xavi.
