The Premier League is set to issue disciplinary charges against clubs that violated financial regulations during the 2021-2024 reporting period, with three teams reportedly fearing potential points deductions.
On Tuesday, charges will be brought against clubs found to have breached the league’s profit and sustainability regulations (PSR). Teams that reported losses in the first two years of the reporting cycle were required to submit financial accounts for the year ending June 2024 by December last year.
Clubs served with complaints will have 14 days to respond. Historically, Everton, Nottingham Forest, and Leicester City have been penalized for similar breaches. In January last year, Everton and Nottingham Forest faced PSR charges, with Nottingham Forest docked four points after exceeding the allowable loss threshold of £61 million by £34.5 million. Leicester City, although charged for exceeding the PSR threshold by £24.4 million in the 2022-23 cycle, successfully appealed the decision.
Currently, Leicester City is reportedly at the highest risk of sanctions, with cumulative losses of £124 million over three seasons before their relegation. Speculation surrounds their potential charge, though no official comments have been made by the club or the league. Additionally, two other clubs are believed to be nearing the threshold for potential violations.
Chelsea’s ownership remains confident in their compliance with PSR rules despite significant transfer spending following the 2022 takeover by Todd Boehly’s consortium. Everton and Nottingham Forest are also reportedly optimistic about their financial positions. Any clubs charged on Tuesday must respond within two weeks.
