The Premier League has issued a statement denouncing the racist abuse directed at Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure following the 2-2 draw against Liverpool in Wednesday’s Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.
Doucoure, 32, started the match but was sent off after a clash with Curtis Jones, who was also dismissed by referee Michael Oliver. Before that, the Mali international appeared to provoke Liverpool fans in the away section, prompting Jones, 24, to step in. A scuffle involving multiple players followed, leading to the ejections of Liverpool manager Arne Slot and his assistant Sipke Hulshoff.
After the game, Doucoure was subjected to racist abuse on social media. The Premier League released a statement on Thursday at 1:57 pm, condemning the abuse and emphasizing that discrimination has no place in football or society. Fans were encouraged to report any such incidents.
Everton and Liverpool also issued a joint statement strongly condemning the racist abuse. They described it as unacceptable and vowed to support an ongoing Merseyside Police investigation to identify those responsible. The clubs urged social media users to report abusive content and called on platforms to take responsibility by banning offenders.
The statement reaffirmed that racism and hate have no place online, in stadiums, or within communities.
