Jamie Carragher has cautioned Liverpool against signing Swedish striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
The 25-year-old has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield since announcing his desire to leave Newcastle last month.
Newcastle reportedly values Isak at £150 million, hoping to get as much as possible amid a difficult summer transfer window.
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, sponsored by Sky Bet, Carragher expressed his reservations about the potential deal.
He said: “From a Liverpool fan’s perspective, I personally don’t want Liverpool to spend £150 million on Isak.
“There’s something about Liverpool spending £80 million on a striker who ends up being just a backup…
It just doesn’t sit right with me.”
Carragher’s concerns seem to stem from the fact that Liverpool already invested heavily in a forward this summer, signing Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for £79 million last month.
He suggested that pursuing Isak now feels like a reactionary, opportunistic move after the player made himself available by pushing for a transfer.
Carragher added: “Isak clearly made a fuss once, and it just feels a bit messy to me. It doesn’t seem like a well-planned move.
“I don’t think the idea was to spend £80 million on one striker and then try to buy another for £120 million.
“I do want Liverpool to sign him, but £150 million? That price is more like what you’d expect for Mbappe.”
Even though Liverpool brought in Ekitike, the possible sale of Darwin Núñez to Al Hilal — reportedly for around £46 million — could open up space for another forward at Anfield.
