A surprise contender has entered the race to sign Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, with reports suggesting they are prepared to make a major sale to fund the transfer.
Nunez, who joined Liverpool from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for a reported fee of €75 million (£64 million), has struggled to live up to expectations. His recent underwhelming performances have sparked speculation that Liverpool may consider offloading the Uruguayan forward during the January transfer window.
While several clubs have expressed interest, a prominent new suitor has emerged, reportedly willing to sell a star player to secure Nunez’s services.
According to Anfield Watch, multiple Saudi Pro League clubs are keen on signing Nunez, with Al Hilal leading the charge. The club is eager to strengthen its squad ahead of their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup in June. To facilitate the move, Al Hilal is reportedly considering selling Neymar Jr., one of their marquee players.
Neymar, who joined Al Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain in August 2023, has struggled with injuries, making only seven appearances for the Saudi club and contributing one goal and three assists. Given his fitness issues and limited impact, Al Hilal sees this as an opportune moment to part ways with the Brazilian star.
Nunez, viewed as an ideal replacement, has a history with Al Hilal manager Jorge Jesus, who previously coached the striker at Benfica. Under Jesus’ guidance, Nunez scored 32 goals and provided 14 assists in 66 appearances.
The Liverpool forward faced criticism after failing to score in the team’s 4-0 FA Cup third-round victory over Accrington Stanley. Fans expressed frustration as goals came from Diogo Jota, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jayden Danns, and summer signing Federico Chiesa, while Nunez struggled to make an impact.
