Liverpool supporters have been left stunned by the hefty fee the club is reportedly paying for their new striker, Hugo Ekitike.
Following a hectic week filled with rumors linking the Reds to both Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Ekitike, it seems Liverpool may have finally landed their man.
Isak was said to be manager Arne Slot’s top target this summer, and Liverpool even tabled a massive £120 million bid. However, Newcastle remained firm, insisting the Swedish striker was not for sale.
As a result, Liverpool turned their focus to Ekitike, who has also drawn interest from top English clubs, including Manchester United and Newcastle.
Reports now suggest that a deal for the French forward is complete, and the price tag has caught fans off guard.
Earlier in the transfer window, Newcastle reportedly had a £70 million bid for Ekitike rejected, as Frankfurt held out for their £85 million valuation.
Just days later, Liverpool’s first offer was accepted, with Fabrizio Romano revealing that the total package could reach €95 million (£82.5 million).
Ekitike, 23, is expected to sign a six-year contract, keeping him at Anfield until June 2031. He reportedly made it clear he only wanted to join Liverpool, despite other suitors.
According to Sky Sports, the Reds will pay a base fee of £69 million, with performance-based add-ons potentially raising the total to £78 million (€90 million).
Although Liverpool have finally secured a new striker, not all fans are pleased with the cost, expressing concerns on social media.
One fan commented on Romano’s Instagram post: “This transfer window has so many questionable prices wtf.”
Another added: “95 mil is too much for this.”
A third fan wrote: “I’m not sure about this deal. I don’t think he’s worth the money, even though I hoped we’d get Isak. Still, I trust the manager and hope Ekitike turns out to be the striker we need.”
