Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard is being tipped for a return to management, having emerged as the leading candidate for a major role.
At 44, Gerrard is regarded as one of England’s all-time greats. He spent the bulk of his 18-year playing career with Liverpool (1998–2015) before moving to LA Galaxy in Major League Soccer. He retired in 2016.
Since then, Gerrard has ventured into coaching, managing Rangers, Aston Villa, and most recently, Saudi club Al Ettifaq, which he left in January. He’s been without a managerial role since.
Now, Gerrard is the strong favourite to return to Rangers, as the Scottish club seeks a new head coach. According to The Daily Record, he’s currently the bookmakers’ top pick for the Ibrox job.
The report also claims Gerrard has asked for time to discuss the move with his family, considering the impact of relocating from Bahrain, where they’ve been based since 2023.
Other names in the frame include Russell Martin and Davide Ancelotti, with Gerrard priced at 1/3 by Coral, ahead of Ancelotti (2/1) and Martin (9/2). Marco Rose, Danny Rohl, and Frank Lampard are considered long shots.
Coral’s John Hill commented: “Gerrard had a successful tenure at Rangers from 2018 to 2021, and our odds now reflect that he’s the clear favourite to return, with Ancelotti his main rival for the role.”
