Steven Gerrard revealed that he regrets not playing for two other clubs after leaving Liverpool for LA Galaxy in 2015.
As speculation grows over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s potential free transfer to Real Madrid this summer, Liverpool fans have been reflecting on the loyalty of their former captain. Reports from talkSPORT on Tuesday confirmed that the Liverpool and England defender had agreed to join Madrid, following months of rumors linking him to the Bernabéu.
Alexander-Arnold, who joined Liverpool’s academy 21 years ago, is set to depart, leaving fans heartbroken that the “local lad” didn’t follow a similar path to Gerrard.
Gerrard left Anfield in 2015 for LA Galaxy but later admitted to Gary Neville on The Overlap that he regrets not playing in Scotland.
“In Glasgow, whether it’s Celtic or Rangers, the rivalry is constant—whether you’re in a press conference, on the street, or at the supermarket,” Gerrard said.
“It’s intense. You don’t fully grasp it unless you’re part of it. Now, looking back, I ask myself if I should have chosen one of them instead of going to America. But I probably went to America for different reasons,” he added.
Having managed Rangers, Gerrard has experienced the pressure of Old Firm derbies firsthand and spoke about the challenge of securing wins for the blue side of Glasgow.
“They’re fantastic games to be part of, but at the time, you just want them over with and the right result,” he said.
“Rangers are a fantastic club. The support I had from the fans, the board, and everyone involved was incredible,” he continued.
Gerrard also explained why he left Rangers for Aston Villa in 2021, emphasizing that family was his priority.
“I still have a lot of respect for Rangers and their fans. But I missed the Premier League, and after being away from my family for three and a half years, I felt that if I didn’t take this opportunity, another might not come,” he told Neville.
