Ryan Gravenberch’s agent has issued a statement to clarify his recent remarks after suggesting he would “love” for the Liverpool midfielder to play for Real Madrid.
Gravenberch, 22, has been a key figure in Liverpool’s midfield this season, contributing to what could be a Premier League title-winning campaign. With uncertainty surrounding the futures of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah, Liverpool’s new head coach, Arne Slot, will be eager to retain the Dutch midfielder.
However, in a recent interview with Spanish outlet MARCA, Gravenberch’s agent, Jose Fortes Rodriguez, made a surprising statement.
“When Ryan was 16, Barcelona approached us,” Rodriguez revealed. “They wanted to sign him, but his father and I prioritized his development. He’s good enough for Real Madrid. We would love to see him play there, but Liverpool would demand a high fee. I know Madrid has been monitoring him, but right now, it’s impossible.”
His comments sparked concern among Liverpool fans, with many expressing their worries on social media.
To address the backlash, Rodriguez later posted a clarification on Instagram.
“I’m Spanish,” he wrote. “Real Madrid is my dream club, not Ryan’s. He is very happy at Liverpool, and if you ask him, he will agree that Liverpool is the biggest club in the world. No stress, keep calm.”
This statement will be reassuring for both Slot and Liverpool supporters, particularly given Gravenberch’s consistency this season. He has started every Premier League match of the 2024/25 campaign—a stark contrast to his limited role under Jurgen Klopp.
Gravenberch has previously credited Slot for his resurgence, telling TNT Sports in November:
“Now I start a lot of games, so it’s a different situation. The coach gave me confidence when I needed it, and I’m happy to be proving myself again.”
He also highlighted the challenges of inconsistent game time, explaining:
“It’s tough when you’re in and out of the team—playing one match, then being on the bench, coming on for 10 minutes, and not getting into rhythm. But having a consistent run of games makes a big difference.”
