Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur suffered a serious injury during the Carabao Cup match against Liverpool.
On Wednesday night, Premier League leaders Liverpool traveled to London to face Tottenham in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
Bentancur, who had recently returned from a seven-match suspension imposed in November for using a racial slur against teammate Son Heung-min during a televised interview, was included in the starting lineup. However, he was forced to leave the match early after sustaining an injury that prompted Sky Sports cameras to cut away.
In the 15th minute, the midfielder was stretchered off the field after an awkward landing while attempting to head the ball from a corner into Liverpool’s box. He received nearly ten minutes of on-pitch treatment before being substituted, with Brennan Johnson taking his place. The home crowd applauded as Bentancur was taken off.
Details about the injury remain unclear, but Tottenham confirmed during halftime that Bentancur was conscious and speaking. He was transported to a hospital for further evaluation. The club’s official account posted on X: “We can confirm Rodrigo is conscious, talking, and will go to hospital for further checks.”
Sky Sports presenter Mark Chapman also provided an update, noting that Bentancur remained with doctors in the dressing room for ongoing assessment.
This match marked Bentancur’s third appearance since serving his seven-match ban. Tottenham’s appeal of the suspension was rejected, and Bentancur was fined £100,000 in addition to missing games. The 27-year-old had also recently served a one-match Premier League suspension for accumulating yellow cards, which caused him to miss the game against Newcastle United.
