Robbie Fowler’s theory about Liverpool’s contract negotiations has gained renewed attention following the announcement of Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure.
After months of speculation, it was officially revealed on Monday that Alexander-Arnold will leave Liverpool at the end of the season. In an emotional message shared on social media, the 26-year-old said: “After 20 years at Liverpool Football Club, now is the time for me to confirm that I will be leaving at the end of the season. This is easily the hardest decision I’ve ever made in my life.”
His exit comes shortly after teammates Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah signed contract extensions, despite all three players being at the center of contract-related discussions for most of the season.
Back in January, Liverpool legend and former striker Robbie Fowler offered his own take on the situation. Speaking to Amazon Prime, he speculated: “I’ve got a little theory – and maybe it’s far off – but I think two of them may have already signed, and one hasn’t. But the club can’t reveal that publicly, because it would make the third player look bad.”
He added: “It makes sense, doesn’t it? If two players announce their contracts are done, it puts enormous pressure on the one who hasn’t signed yet.”
Though Fowler’s comments were purely speculative at the time, recent developments have given his theory more weight.
Alexander-Arnold is now widely expected to join Real Madrid in the summer. During his time with Liverpool, he earned an impressive collection of trophies, including two Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup, two League Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup, UEFA Super Cup, and the Community Shield.
