Robbie Fowler believes that the more he watches Darwin Nunez, the more he feels the striker “is not a Liverpool player.” Fowler, who is working as a pundit for ITV during Liverpool’s FA Cup third-round match against Accrington Stanley, shared his thoughts on the Uruguayan’s performance.
Manager Arne Slot made several changes to the squad after the 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, including bringing in Diogo Jota, Wataru Endo, and Nunez. Despite only scoring four goals this season, Nunez was included in the starting lineup, with his future at the club becoming a topic of increasing speculation.
Fowler was asked about Nunez’s situation before the game and offered a harsh critique, saying, “The more I see him, the more I think he’s not a Liverpool player. Some might criticize me for saying that, but you don’t bring in a player just for their work ethic; they need to score goals. He’s a fan favorite for his effort, but he needs to perform better in that Liverpool shirt.”
However, Fowler believes Nunez has room to improve and offered advice on how he can develop further. “I don’t think he’s fast enough in his thinking when it comes to finishing. He’s quick on the pitch, but his mental speed needs to be quicker. When he has time to think, he struggles. He’s better when he acts instinctively, but we still need more from him. His decision-making, positioning, and finishing as a striker need to improve.”
