Liverpool remain keen on bringing in a new striker this summer, especially following Darwin Núñez’s move to Al Hilal.
The Reds have shown strong intent in the transfer market, having already bolstered their squad with the additions of Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez.
With the Premier League season just days away, the reigning champions are still actively pursuing reinforcements, with a striker being their top priority.
Alexander Isak of Newcastle United is their primary target, but Liverpool are also exploring backup options in case they’re unable to secure the Swedish forward.
One of those alternatives is Brentford’s Yoane Wissa, who netted 20 goals last season and has been linked with a potential move to Anfield, as new manager Arne Slot looks to strengthen the attack.
Wissa Prefers Newcastle Over Liverpool
However, recent developments suggest that Liverpool’s chances of signing Wissa have all but disappeared.
According to Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, Wissa has expressed a strong preference for a move to Newcastle United and has no intention of joining Liverpool.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Downie said:
“Wissa has verbally agreed personal terms; that won’t be a problem. He’s very eager to join Newcastle. I heard today from a source that Liverpool made a late approach, but Wissa has no interest in going there. He’s fully committed to Newcastle and wants to play at St James’ Park and feature in the Champions League next season.”
Newcastle Focused on Attacking Reinforcements
While Wissa has set his sights on Newcastle, this development could actually benefit Liverpool.
If Newcastle secure Wissa, they might become more open to letting Isak leave—a potential boost for Liverpool in their pursuit of the striker.
It remains uncertain what will happen with both Wissa and Isak. Newcastle have had a challenging transfer window, missing out on players like Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Šeško, both of whom joined Manchester United. The Magpies are now eager to turn things around before the window closes.
