Liverpool Could Be Offered the Chance to Re-Sign Former Premier League Midfield Target

Liverpool might be presented with another opportunity to sign Joao Palhinha, a player they were linked with during his time at Fulham. Back in December 2023, Christian Falk revealed the Reds had a genuine interest in the Portuguese midfielder before his move to Bayern Munich.

However, recent reports suggest that Palhinha’s stint in Germany might not last long, with a potential return to the Premier League looking increasingly possible.

Palhinha May Be Offered to Liverpool

According to CaughtOffside, Liverpool are among several English clubs who could now be approached regarding Palhinha, as his representatives reportedly explore options for a move back to England. Limited playing time at Bayern has prompted the midfielder to consider a fresh start, and the German club may be open to letting him go—especially if it helps them tie down Leon Goretzka to a new deal.

The 29-year-old is said to favour a Premier League return.

A Potential Depth Option for Liverpool?

If Liverpool were to bring in Palhinha, the deal would bear similarities to their 2020 signing of Thiago Alcantara—who also joined from Bayern at age 29 and played in a comparable midfield role.

Despite his limited appearances in Germany, Palhinha has shown glimpses of the qualities that earned him the Bayern move in the first place. He remains among the top midfielders in Europe for defensive stats—ranking in the top 2% for tackles, top 10% for blocks, top 9% for aerial duels, and top 8% for pass completion, according to FBref.

Praised as “sensational” by Rio Ferdinand and described by Robbie Savage as a “fantastic fit” for Liverpool, Palhinha could prove to be a valuable squad addition. Still, with his 30th birthday approaching in July and some fitness concerns this season, it may be tough for him to push past the likes of Ryan Gravenberch or Alexis Mac Allister.

Whether a deal materializes could depend on the transfer fee and Palhinha’s willingness to accept a rotation role rather than a guaranteed starting spot.
