Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona remains uncertain, with Liverpool keeping a close eye on developments ahead of a potential summer transfer.
The Dutch midfielder could be on the move, but a pay cut would be necessary. Although under contract at Camp Nou until 2026, his substantial salary has become a financial burden for Barcelona. The club is keen to cash in while they still can, seeing his sale as a way to alleviate their economic struggles.
Despite this, De Jong is determined to see out his contract, aware that none of his potential suitors are willing to match his current wages of approximately €19 million per year. Reports suggest that Barcelona is actively seeking a sale to free up funds and reduce their wage bill.
According to TeamTalk, the Catalan giants are open to offers around €35 million, a price Liverpool considers reasonable. However, the real hurdle is persuading De Jong to accept a significantly reduced salary, which he would need to agree to if he were to move to Anfield.
Complicating matters further, Juventus has recently entered the race. With Douglas Luiz failing to impress, the Italian club has inquired about De Jong’s availability. While the transfer fee wouldn’t be an issue, Juventus, like Liverpool, is only willing to move forward if the midfielder agrees to lower his wage demands.
De Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in January 2019 for around £60 million and has since made 237 appearances. While he has been a key player at times, injuries and inconsistent playing time under Hansi Flick have affected his role, with an ankle injury keeping him out of the first eight La Liga matches this season.
