Manchester United reportedly aim to derail Liverpool’s pursuit of a shared transfer target in the final stretch of the window.
Arne Slot’s Liverpool are said to be keen on signing Marc Guehi to strengthen their thin centre-back options ahead of the 1 September deadline. Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has expressed a desire to resolve the 25-year-old’s future soon, as Guehi enters the final year of his contract.
However, new reports on Monday evening suggest that Liverpool could be beaten to the deal by their biggest rivals.

According to Steve Kay of Football Transfers, Manchester United have now officially expressed interest in Guehi, potentially attempting to snatch the England international from Liverpool. The Old Trafford club is said to be making preliminary enquiries to assess Crystal Palace’s valuation, which is believed to be around £40 million (via Sami Mokbel, BBC Sport).
Meanwhile, DAVEOCKOP reported (via X) that Liverpool are scheduled for talks with Guehi this week. The defender is reportedly focused on a move to Anfield if he does leave Selhurst Park.
Losing Guehi to United would be a major blow for Liverpool
If Liverpool were to miss out on signing a proven centre-back like Guehi to a struggling Manchester United side—who finished with half as many points last season—it would reflect poorly on FSG, especially given the urgent need for reinforcements in defence.
Although United are only in the early stages of exploring the transfer, the report should prompt Richard Hughes to act swiftly to avoid being overtaken by their rivals in the race for Guehi.
Even though Sporting CP under Ruben Amorim had a disappointing 2024/25 campaign, they still had the clout to attract a top striker like Benjamin Sesko—who was once linked to Liverpool before the club signed Hugo Ekitike and made a move for Alexander Isak.
In short, Liverpool cannot afford to take risks when it comes to signing Guehi, particularly after their recent defensive struggles against Palace in the Community Shield.
Having outperformed United in the league in recent seasons, Liverpool must now show the same dominance in the transfer market—and ensure they don’t lose out on a player who Slot clearly needs.
