Liverpool Eye Marcus Thuram as Potential Attacking Reinforcement Amid Nunez Uncertainty
Liverpool are reportedly looking to strengthen their attack this summer, with Inter Milan’s Marcus Thuram emerging as a key target.
The French forward has been in impressive form since joining Inter on a free transfer, catching the eye with standout performances in Serie A. According to TBRFootball, Liverpool scouts were in attendance when Thuram scored against Feyenoord in the Champions League, further fueling speculation about a potential move.
However, signing the 27-year-old won’t come cheap. Thuram has a £70 million release clause in his contract, and Liverpool could face stiff competition from Arsenal in the race for his signature.
Forward Position Still a Concern for Liverpool
Despite enjoying a strong season under Arne Slot—reaching the Carabao Cup final, staying in control of their Champions League tie with Paris Saint-Germain, and suffering just one Premier League defeat—Liverpool’s striker situation remains unsettled.
Slot has frequently rotated between Darwin Nunez, Diogo Jota, and Luis Diaz, suggesting he has yet to find a consistent first-choice forward. While Nunez has shown flashes of brilliance, including standout performances against PSG and Southampton, his inconsistency remains a concern.
Newcastle’s Alexander Isak has also been linked with a move to Anfield, but Thuram could be a more affordable alternative. The Inter Milan star has already netted 15 goals this season and has been praised for his intelligent movement, hold-up play, and link-up ability. Football analyst Ben Mattinson has described Thuram as “so intelligent,” highlighting his quality in linking up attacks.
Nunez at the Center of Controversy
Liverpool’s interest in Thuram comes after a controversial moment involving Darwin Nunez in their recent 3-1 win over Southampton. Nunez scored in the match but was criticized for winning a crucial penalty that shifted the game in Liverpool’s favor.
Southampton manager Ivan Juric was furious with the decision, claiming, “This cannot be a penalty ever. We’re in England, normally they don’t allow these things. He [Nunez] goes down too easily.”
As Liverpool weigh their options for a more reliable goal-scorer, Thuram’s name is gaining traction. Whether they make a formal approach remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the Reds are considering fresh attacking options ahead of the summer transfer window.
