Ibrahima Konaté Declines Liverpool Contract Amid Real Madrid Interest
Ibrahima Konaté has rejected a third contract proposal from Liverpool, strongly indicating he may leave the club once his current deal expires next summer. Despite lengthy negotiations, both sides have failed to reach an agreement, leaving Liverpool facing the possibility of losing the 26-year-old centre-back.
With his contract entering its final year, Konaté will be free to negotiate a pre-contract with other clubs starting in January. According to Marca, the French defender has his sights set on joining Real Madrid on a free transfer, having dismissed Liverpool’s latest offer.
This situation mirrors what Liverpool previously experienced with Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose contract situation also caused concern at the club.
Since arriving from RB Leipzig in 2021, Konaté has established himself as a crucial part of Liverpool’s defense alongside Virgil van Dijk. However, with his current deal expiring in June 2026 and contract talks now stalled, uncertainty around his future has intensified.
Konaté’s hesitancy to commit comes at a difficult time for Liverpool. Real Madrid, known for attracting top Premier League talent, have identified him as a key target. Reports suggest the Spanish giants are confident they’ll secure his signature, with Marca even describing his departure as inevitable.
Adding to the speculation, Konaté joked recently that his national teammate Kylian Mbappé “calls me every two hours” to convince him to join Madrid.
With Liverpool yet to meet his expectations and Madrid pushing hard, all indications point toward Konaté leaving Anfield next summer unless the Reds present a significantly improved offer.
