A leading journalist has shared new insights into Alexander Isak’s potential transfer to Liverpool amid the striker’s refusal to train with Newcastle United.
Although Liverpool has secured several high-profile signings this summer, their chase for Newcastle’s star forward Isak remains the headline story of the transfer window.
Reports suggest Liverpool manager Arne Slot considers the Swedish international his ideal signing, with Isak reportedly eager to join the Reds as soon as possible.
So eager, in fact, that Isak is said to have declined returning to Newcastle training and even moved out of his luxury Ponteland home.
Now, respected journalist Luke Edwards has weighed in on the saga, criticizing Isak’s agent for misleading the striker earlier in the summer.
In a critical social media post, Edwards claimed Isak’s actions could be explained by his agent assuring him the Liverpool move was certain, despite reality suggesting otherwise.
Because of this false promise, Isak has gone to great lengths to force the transfer, damaging his reputation at Newcastle—a mistake he’ll likely regret if the deal falls through.
Edwards wrote on X: “Alexander Isak’s agent has let him down badly.
“I don’t excuse Isak’s behavior, but he was told the Liverpool move was guaranteed, even though Liverpool wouldn’t meet Newcastle’s valuation. All he had to do was act out to push the deal through.
“Now, Isak has alienated the fan base, tarnished his reputation in football, and might not get the move he was promised.
“He signed a six-year contract with no release clause—negotiated by his agent. Trying to force an exit with three years left was always risky, but he did it anyway.”
With just over two weeks until the transfer window closes on September 1, Edwards believes a Liverpool move is becoming increasingly unlikely.
Still, he noted that despite the summer’s turmoil, the door remains open for Isak to return to Newcastle’s squad if he stays.
Edwards added: “Isak might still end up at Liverpool, but chances are fading fast and have for weeks. How he repairs the damage remains to be seen, but he will play next season regardless.
“The sooner he recognizes his mistake and apologizes, the better. If he performs well and scores goals, he could secure a big move next summer.”
Regarding Isak, Liverpool boss Arne Slot has not commented directly on the transfer but did express the club’s hope to sign another attacker before the window closes.
Speaking ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth, Slot told Sky Sports about new signing Hugo Ekitike: “I see Hugo mainly as a No. 9 who can also play from the left or alongside another No. 9. We need at least one more attacker.”
