Premier League Reverses Course on Arne Slot’s Touchline Ban After Liverpool-Everton Clash
The Premier League has reportedly backtracked on Arne Slot’s two-match touchline ban following his red card after Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday.
Slot, 46, was visibly frustrated after the match and confronted the officiating team before he and his assistant, Sipke Hulshoff, were dismissed by referee Michael Oliver.
On Thursday morning, the Premier League initially released a statement confirming that Slot had been banned for two games due to “offensive, insulting, or abusive language.” However, in a surprising twist, the statement was later deleted, with The Athletic’s James Pearce reporting that the announcement was made in error.
Slot’s Ban Still Uncertain
Pearce clarified the situation on social media, stating:
> “Yeah, it was a mistake by the Premier League. The FA has yet to review the referee’s report and decide on any action. They have three working days to determine whether to charge Slot. As it stands, he is not banned for Sunday.”
Meanwhile, The Mail’s Lewis Steele provided further details, explaining that the FA will assess Oliver’s report and decide whether Slot’s case falls under “standard” sanctions (which come with a set punishment) or a “non-standard” case, which would require a hearing.
Since Slot has already served a touchline ban this season, it’s possible the FA will opt for a hearing, meaning a final decision may not be reached before Liverpool’s match against Wolves this weekend.
Potential Timeline for FA Decision
The FA has until Monday to formally charge Slot.
Liverpool would then have three days to respond with evidence.
The FA would have another three days to reply.
If a hearing is required, it must take place within 10 days, meaning the entire process could take 2-3 weeks.
As a result, Slot could still be on the touchline for the Wolves match, with any ban or fine being enforced later.
What Did Slot Say to Michael Oliver?
While the exact words exchanged between Slot and Oliver remain unconfirmed, professional lip reader Jeremy Freeman provided insight into the Liverpool boss’s outburst.
Slot reportedly confronted an assistant referee, saying:
> “That’s not a push? It’s a f**king disgrace… if you go and watch that again.”
He then sarcastically told another official, “Well done.”
Before his red card, Slot was also believed to have said:
