During Arsenal’s Premier League match against Wolves, the league issued an in-game statement after Myles Lewis-Skelly received a controversial straight red card.
The Gunners were reduced to 10 men in the 43rd minute when 18-year-old Lewis-Skelly became the third-youngest player in Premier League history to be shown a red card. Referee Michael Oliver dismissed him for a challenge on Matt Doherty, ruling it as serious foul play.
Despite the Wolves defender being deep in his own penalty area, Oliver confidently issued the red card, and the decision was upheld by VAR. Shortly afterward, the Premier League Match Centre released a statement, saying: “The referee’s decision to show a red card to Lewis-Skelly was reviewed and confirmed by VAR, which deemed the challenge to be serious foul play.”
Fans on social media expressed their outrage:
One fan stated, “I don’t say this lightly, but that red card for Lewis-Skelly is the worst decision I’ve ever seen at a football stadium. I’m baffled how VAR cleared that. It’s the definition of a ‘good’ yellow card to stop a counterattack.”
