Premier League Explain Why Cristian Romero Escaped Red Card in Goalless Spurs Draw at Brentford

The Premier League has clarified why Cristian Romero avoided a red card during Tottenham’s goalless Premier League draw with Brentford on Thursday night.

Thomas Frank’s side made the trip to the Gtech Community Stadium hoping to build on their narrow 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace, but his return to Brentford ended in a low-key stalemate with few talking points.

One major moment of controversy came in the second half when Romero appeared at risk of being sent off for a possible denial of an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. Referee Andy Madley opted against showing a straight red card, and after a VAR review, the original decision stood.

Explaining the call on the Premier League Match Centre X account, officials said: “The referee’s decision of no red card to Romero for a potential DOGSO offence was checked and confirmed by VAR, as there was no clear and obvious error.”

Brentford had an early goal ruled out when Kevin Schade found the net inside the opening 10 minutes, only for the strike to be disallowed for offside. Beyond that, the contest struggled to ignite, with both sides failing to create clear chances to claim all three points.

Tottenham’s Archie Gray also appealed for a penalty in the second half after going down in the box, but Madley dismissed the claims and VAR backed the on-field call.

Frank introduced Randal Kolo Muani and Mathys Tel late on in search of a breakthrough against his former club, yet neither substitute was able to influence the outcome.

The match also marked the first game missed by last season’s top scorer Brennan Johnson, who is closing in on a £33.5 million move to Crystal Palace. The Wales international has reportedly completed his medical, with football.london reporting that Frank and sporting director Fabio Paratici informed him on New Year’s Eve that he no longer featured in the club’s long-term plans.
