One senior Liverpool player was absent from Darwin Nunez’s farewell photo shared on social media.

Nunez, 26, recently completed a transfer to Saudi club Al Hilal for around £46.3 million, ending his three-year stint in the Premier League.

During his time at Liverpool, the Uruguayan scored 40 goals and provided 26 assists in 143 appearances, playing a key role in their Premier League title win last season.

This summer, several players, including Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jarell Quansah, Luis Diaz, and Caoimhin Kelleher, have left Liverpool, while new signings such as Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike, Armin Pecsi, Freddie Woodman, and Giorgi Mamardashvili have arrived at Anfield.

Following the confirmation of Nunez’s exit, many Liverpool players shared heartfelt messages.

On Wednesday, Mohamed Salah expressed: “I consider myself lucky to have had you as a teammate and friend. You were always very real and brought so much good energy wherever you went.

“You made us laugh and showed heart in everything you did. You will be missed, and I wish you the best in your new club.”

On Thursday, Nunez said his goodbyes at Liverpool’s AXA Training Centre and posed for a group photo with the first-team squad.

The picture included Salah, Florian Wirtz, captain Virgil van Dijk, and several backroom staff, but one notable absence was defender Joe Gomez.

Gomez, who recently returned to training after an Achilles injury, was not in the photo—likely due to ongoing fitness concerns.

The 28-year-old left Liverpool’s pre-season tour of Asia in July to return home for treatment following multiple injury setbacks.

He missed friendlies against AC Milan, Yokohama F. Marinos, and Athletic Club, as well as the recent Community Shield match against Crystal Palace, only returning to light training on Wednesday.

Ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Bournemouth on Friday, manager Arne Slot addressed Gomez’s fitness in a press conference.

“With Joe [Gomez], I have to make a decision on that,” Slot said. “He missed a lot of pre-season and only trained twice. There is a possibility he might be on the bench, but I have to look at the numbers and who we’re gonna take.”
