A Newcastle United player reportedly needed to be “calmed down” after a meeting regarding Alexander Isak.
The long-running saga that dominated the summer transfer window finally concluded on Monday night.
After weeks of speculation, Isak left Newcastle to join Liverpool in a British record transfer reportedly worth £125 million.
The Swedish forward was Liverpool’s final signing of the summer, following other additions like Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Giovanni Leoni.
Before his move to Anfield, Isak did everything possible to force his exit from Newcastle.
The 25-year-old was excluded from Eddie Howe’s squad for the pre-season tour and publicly expressed his wish to leave the club.
Frustrated by the stalled negotiations, Isak allegedly declared he would never play for Newcastle again.
Last month, he also accused the club on social media of breaking its “promises.”
A recent Daily Mail report revealed new insights into the prolonged transfer saga.
It suggested Newcastle’s management felt pressured to complete Isak’s sale after spending heavily on German striker Nick Woltemade, whose deal could reach £69 million, a club record.
The report explained, “Sources close to the situation have said that some senior officials were growing ‘nervous’. After committing big funds on Woltemade — pushing summer spending to £200 million — they needed the sale to go through for financial and team morale reasons.”
Moreover, senior players in the dressing room were reportedly displeased with Isak’s behavior.
Following a meeting about Isak’s future, the report stated one player had to be “calmed down by a fellow countryman.”
After joining Liverpool, Isak spoke out, saying: “I feel incredible. It’s been a long journey to reach this point, but I’m really happy to be part of this club and everything it represents. I’m proud and excited for what lies ahead.
“I’m glad it’s all settled, and I can focus on working hard. I look forward to reuniting with my teammates and fans and getting back on the pitch.”
