Newcastle United issued a harsh statement after Alexander Isak’s transfer to Liverpool on the final day of the transfer window.
The 25-year-old striker completed a British record £125 million move to Liverpool on Monday, signing a six-year deal after a protracted summer transfer saga. During this period, Isak was left out of Newcastle’s squad for their pre-season tour in Asia and the first three Premier League matches against Aston Villa, Liverpool, and Leeds United.
Earlier, Isak publicly accused Newcastle of breaking promises, which fueled his desire to leave the club. In August, he wrote on Instagram, “The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things stand for me right now — which is why a change is best for everyone involved, not just myself.”
Despite these claims, Newcastle responded by stating that “no commitment has ever been made by a club official that Alex could leave Newcastle United this summer.”
On September 1, Isak officially joined Premier League champions Liverpool, departing Newcastle after scoring 62 goals in 109 appearances since his arrival from Real Sociedad in 2022.
One of Isak’s standout moments at Newcastle was his decisive goal in last season’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool, which helped the club secure their first major trophy since 1955.
While Isak and the team were celebrated by fans after the League Cup win, his recent actions have left him with few supporters on Tyneside.
Typically, when a player departs, clubs release warm statements highlighting their achievements and wishing them well. However, Newcastle’s official announcement was noticeably cold.
The club’s statement read: “Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer fee. The Sweden international joined the Magpies from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions.”
This stands in stark contrast to their message regarding the loan of 18-year-old winger Trevan Sanusi to FC Lorient, which included well-wishes for his loan spell, illustrating a clear difference in tone.
