Newcastle United fans likely felt a sense of relief when Liverpool secured the signing of Hugo Ekitike from Eintracht Frankfurt for a reported £70 million.
Although the Magpies missed out on one of their top transfer targets, many assumed this meant Alexander Isak would be staying at St James’ Park.
Isak was instrumental in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup victory and Champions League qualification last season, netting 27 goals and providing six assists in 42 appearances—firmly establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s top strikers.
Heading into the new season, Isak was expected to remain a key figure for Eddie Howe’s side. However, a surprising development emerged on Thursday.
On Tuesday, Newcastle announced their squad for the pre-season tour of Asia, and Isak was notably absent. The club stated his exclusion was due to a minor injury, but more surprising news soon followed.
Reports emerged that Isak is open to a move away from Tyneside, with Liverpool reportedly among the clubs interested.
This revelation is a major setback for Newcastle, who were counting on Isak not just for their domestic campaign but also for their hopes in Europe.
Amid the uncertainty, journalist David Ornstein provided a glimmer of hope for supporters.
According to Ornstein, Newcastle are eyeing RB Leipzig forward Benjamin Sesko as a potential replacement if Isak does leave this summer.
“Newcastle United exploring move for Benjamin Sesko of RB Leipzig in case Alexander Isak leaves,” Ornstein posted on X. “The 22-year-old is a long-time target and would be a priority if Isak departs, although a deal would be financially challenging.”
Sesko has emerged as one of the Bundesliga’s brightest talents, scoring 21 goals and assisting six times in 45 games last season.
However, Newcastle’s pursuit of Sesko could be a blow to Manchester United, who are also reportedly interested in the striker, along with Ollie Watkins and Nicolas Jackson.
