Newcastle supporters have expressed their frustration over a supposed photo of Anthony Gordon and Virgil van Dijk that has been circulating on social media.
The two players clashed during Liverpool’s recent 3-2 Premier League win against Newcastle on August 25.
England international Gordon was sent off for a reckless late challenge on the Dutch defender as tensions flared at St James’ Park. Relations between the two clubs were already strained, especially with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak refusing to play in that match as he pushed for a transfer to Liverpool, which was later completed for a British record fee of £125 million.
During the intense game in the North East, Liverpool built a 2-0 lead and seemed set for an easy win until Gordon was shown a red card following a high-speed collision with Van Dijk just before halftime.
Initially, Gordon was given a yellow card, but after a video assistant referee review, it was upgraded to a sending off.
After the break, Newcastle made a strong comeback to level the score at 2-2 before young Liverpool player Rio Ngumboha scored a dramatic stoppage-time winner.
Following the match, Gordon publicly apologized to Newcastle fans over his red card.
“I sincerely apologise to my teammates and the fans. My intentions were good—I was just trying to bring energy to the game but mistimed my tackle,” he wrote on Instagram.
“I also want to apologize to Virgil. I would never purposely tackle someone like that. We spoke afterward, and he understands.”
Recently, an image claimed to show Gordon and Van Dijk together after the game has been shared on social media.
The picture, which hasn’t been confirmed as authentic by either player, appears to show Gordon smiling while standing beside Van Dijk in the tunnel at St James’ Park.
Liverpool fans quickly mocked Newcastle supporters, suggesting the photo proves that Gordon, a lifelong Reds fan, might be eager to join Liverpool, just like Isak.
“Future Liverpool player for sure,” one fan tweeted.
Another added, “He’s coming home, right?”
Newcastle fans, however, were less amused. One wrote, “It’s not the worst thing I’ve seen, but like the Instagram support for Isak, it feels totally inappropriate given the situation.”
Another questioned, “Surely not?”
Some supporters doubted the image’s authenticity, with one commenting, “This is a cropped photo taken out of context.”
Others called out the overreaction, saying, “A bunch of adults throwing a fit over a photo—it’s embarrassing! Who cares, as long as he plays well and does his job. With the World Cup this year, he’ll have a great season.”
