A new angle of Myles Lewis-Skelly’s red card for Arsenal against Wolves has surfaced, sparking widespread debate among fans.
The 18-year-old was dismissed by referee Michael Oliver at Molineux after bringing down Wolves defender Matt Doherty roughly 10 yards outside the home side’s penalty area. VAR reviewed the incident and upheld Oliver’s decision, labeling the challenge as serious foul play. The Premier League’s Match Centre Twitter account confirmed: “The referee’s call of a red card for Lewis-Skelly was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed his challenge to have been serious foul play.”
Despite the ruling, many fans disagreed, with one Arsenal supporter describing the decision as “the worst I’ve ever witnessed at a football stadium.”
The red card forced Arsenal to play the remainder of the match with 10 men, though Wolves later found themselves in the same position after Joao Gomes received a second yellow card in the 70th minute.
Later, a new reverse, zoomed-in angle of the incident emerged on social media, reigniting the debate. The footage shows contact between Lewis-Skelly and Doherty, with Lewis-Skelly stepping on Doherty’s foot and his boot appearing to make slight contact with Doherty’s shin beforehand.
One fan commented on the new angle: “Seeing this, when you consider it’s 100 percent intentional, an attempt to trip him, and studs-first on the ankle, it’s not as controversial anymore.” Another added: “Absolutely the correct decision. It stopped an attack, and it’s dangerous.”
A third commented, “For anyone standing firmly by their opinion, watch this angle—it’s an ankle breaker.”
Another added, “I can see why it’s a red. No attempt to play the ball, studs up, and catches the shin area.”
A fifth noted, “That’s actually very reckless. Great call by the referee.”
Despite the controversy, the Gunners took a 1-0 lead in the second half thanks to Riccardo Calafiori and held on to secure the win, helping Mikel Arteta’s side bounce back after their 2-2 draw with Aston Villa.
