Mohamed Salah has once again surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo’s highest goal contribution tally in a single Premier League season.
The Liverpool star netted his 24th league goal of the campaign against Aston Villa on Wednesday night. He opened the scoring in the 29th minute at Villa Park, capitalizing on a defensive mistake by Andres Garcia. The Villa full-back’s misplaced pass landed at Diogo Jota’s feet, allowing him to set up Salah for an easy finish into an empty net.
However, Villa responded quickly, with Youri Tielemans volleying in an equalizer in the 38th minute before Ollie Watkins put the hosts ahead just before halftime.
Despite the setback, Salah’s remarkable form continues, with the Egyptian forward now tallying 24 goals and 14 assists in just 26 appearances this season. He currently leads the Premier League in combined goals and assists, positioning himself as the frontrunner for the PFA Player of the Year award.
This could be Salah’s final season at Liverpool, and he appears determined to make it his best yet. Before the match against Villa, he was tied with Ronaldo’s 37-goal contribution record from the Portuguese star’s best Premier League season in 2007/08, when he scored 31 goals and provided six assists. That year, Ronaldo helped Manchester United win both the Premier League and Champions League, earning his first Ballon d’Or.
Salah will be hoping to achieve similar success with Arne Slot’s Liverpool side. However, this isn’t the first time he has outshone Ronaldo’s record. In his debut season with Liverpool in 2017/18, after arriving from Roma, he was directly involved in an astonishing 42 goals, scoring 32 and setting the record for most goals in a 38-game season—a feat later surpassed by Erling Haaland’s 36-goal haul.
With 12 Premier League matches still to play, Salah has his sights set on surpassing his own record and possibly even Thierry Henry’s all-time best of 44 goal involvements (22 goals, 20 assists) from the 2002/03 season. Henry remains the only player to both score and assist at least 20 times in a single campaign, a milestone Salah may look to match as he continues his incredible season.
