A concerned Mo Salah seemed to intervene during Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Southampton, fearing they were about to violate a Premier League rule that could lead to a points deduction.
Salah, who scored twice from the penalty spot to take his league tally to 27 goals this season, appeared anxious as Liverpool prepared to make a sixth substitution in the 89th minute, with Jarell Quansah replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Spotted in conversation with referee Lewis Smith, Salah looked panicked, with journalist David Lynch noting his frantic attempts to stop the substitution. Lynch suggested the Egyptian feared Liverpool might be penalized for exceeding the allowed number of changes.
However, Premier League rules permit a sixth substitution when a team uses a concussion sub. Earlier in the game, Southampton’s Jan Bednarek was forced off with a head injury, allowing both teams an additional change. Salah, seemingly unaware of this rule, was worried Liverpool were about to make a costly error.
Despite the moment of concern, Salah’s brace saw him climb to third in Liverpool’s all-time scoring charts and equal Sergio Aguero’s Premier League tally of 184 goals, placing him joint-fifth on the all-time list.
