Critics would be unfair to direct excessive blame at Mo Salah for his performances in the latter stages of Liverpool’s Premier League title bid—especially considering his immense contribution of 44 league goal involvements (27 goals, 17 assists) in the 2024/25 season.
However, there’s no denying that Liverpool’s No.11 struggled once again following the international break. The Reds had to rely on Alexis Mac Allister and Luis Diaz to salvage a point against Fulham on Sunday afternoon.
Mo Salah’s struggles persist
Much of the post-match discussion has focused on Liverpool’s defensive lapses, with Roy Keane even describing their display as worthy of a ‘mid-table team.’
Andy Robertson, who was substituted in the second half, received a 6/10 rating from Sofascore—the lowest of any player on the pitch. By comparison, Salah was rated slightly higher at 6.2/10, though WhoScored was far more critical of his performance.
Still, there’s growing concern over the 32-year-old’s dip in form in recent weeks. The repeated narrative of defenders successfully neutralizing one of the Premier League’s top stars is becoming frustrating.
BBC Radio 5 Live’s Clinton Morrison noted:
> “Calvin Bassey has completely dominated Mo Salah, and he’s struggled to cope. Bassey’s been too strong, stepping in front of him and rendering him ineffective. Salah had a few bright moments in the second half but was nowhere near his usual level.”
What do the stats reveal?
With 54 goal contributions in 45 matches across all competitions, it’s difficult to be too critical of Salah. His record-breaking season has further cemented his legendary status in both the Premier League and Liverpool history.
However, since scoring against Southampton in early March, the team’s attack has looked uninspired—and, at times, toothless.
Perhaps the criticism is a bit harsh, especially considering Luis Diaz found the net against Fulham, and Diogo Jota was decisive in the midweek Merseyside derby.
