Mikel Arteta praised Gabriel Martinelli’s impact off the bench as Arsenal secured a winning start to their Champions League campaign.
The Brazilian striker scored Arsenal’s opener after coming on as a second-half substitute, with Leandro Trossard later adding a late goal to seal victory over Athletic Club.
Martinelli had recently faced criticism and was omitted from the starting lineup in the last two matches following the arrival of Ebere Eze. However, Arsenal’s manager expressed confidence that the 24-year-old would respond positively.
“I was sure that Gabi would react like that,” Arteta said. “You push him to raise his level, and he delivers. He has a strong mentality, is always eager to learn and prove himself, and holds himself to high standards. Moments like this will hopefully restore his confidence because he’s an exceptional player.”
Arteta continued, “He fully deserves this. I really admire Gabi – his attitude, commitment, positivity, and what he’s willing to give for the team. We value all his qualities and what he contributes, and I’m thrilled he decided the game for us today.”
The manager also highlighted the team’s unity, especially in how they celebrated with Martinelli after his goal.
“That’s the spirit,” Arteta said. “It’s why I enjoy working with this group every day. They genuinely support one another and want the best for each other. They recognize the hard work Gabi puts in every day, and even during tough times, they connect with him. I think that means a lot to him.”
