Matheus Cunha Set to Bolster Manchester United’s Attack for 2025/26
Manchester United have secured the signing of Matheus Cunha for the upcoming 2025/26 season, adding much-needed firepower to their frontline.
Manager Ruben Amorim has frequently shown signs of frustration on the touchline this season, as his side often controls possession but consistently struggles to convert chances. A major factor in United’s attacking woes has been the poor form of Rasmus Hojlund throughout much of the 2024/25 campaign.
With Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Jadon Sancho all expected to depart, Ineos made it a priority to inject creativity and goal-scoring ability into the squad—culminating in the confirmed acquisition of Cunha on Sunday. The Brazilian forward joins from Wolves in a £62.5 million transfer, and his stats suggest he could be a crucial asset.
One of the League’s Most Efficient Finishers
United’s inability to capitalize on opportunities has been a recurring theme, leading Amorim to consider a major squad overhaul this summer. As of March, only three players in the squad were outperforming their expected goals (xG), highlighting a widespread lack of efficiency in front of goal.
That’s where Cunha’s proficiency comes in. According to The Athletic, the former Wolves forward has converted 60% of his big chances over the last two seasons—surpassing elite forwards like Mohamed Salah (48%), Alexander Isak (49%), and Cole Palmer (53%).
Cunha netted 17 goals across all competitions last season, with 15 in the Premier League, placing him joint-eighth in the league’s top scorers.
Why Cunha Fits Amorim’s System
A key issue for Amorim has been getting his squad to adapt to his preferred 3-4-2-1 system. Fortunately, Cunha has experience in a similar setup at Wolves, making him a strong tactical fit for United.
With Alejandro Garnacho reportedly set to leave, Cunha offers a versatile option in the No.10 role—either side of the central striker. Additionally, his strong finishing ability means he could also be deployed as a central forward if needed.
Having already impressed at Old Trafford as a Wolves player, United supporters will be eager to see Cunha replicate that form in a red shirt.
