Martin Tyler was the voice of football on Sky Sports for 33 years, but many Liverpool fans believed he had a bias against their club.
During an appearance on DR Sports, he was asked why his commentary often seemed unenthusiastic when Liverpool scored.
Referencing Andy Cantwell’s deadpan impressions of his calls, the 79-year-old responded simply: “I would, in my defence, get a whole catalogue of Steven Gerrard goals.”
Tyler, a Chester-born broadcaster, seemed to think this brief remark was enough to dismiss claims of bias against Liverpool.

Many Liverpool fans have been critical of Tyler, especially after his controversial comments linking the Hillsborough disaster to hooliganism.
There are also instances from his career that fuel the debate, such as a match against Manchester United where his reactions to Anthony Martial’s and Christian Benteke’s goals were notably different.
Given his long tenure in football broadcasting, it seems unlikely that he harbored a deliberate bias. Fans of various clubs could likely find examples to support their own perspectives.
However, this debate has persisted for years, and while Tyler—named Premier League Commentator of the Decade in the 2000s—did address it, his response was far from in-depth.
