The early goal left Mikel Arteta’s side facing an uphill battle to reach their first Champions League final since 2006. However, Arsenal may have avoided a deeper hole when a penalty shout involving Kvaratskhelia went uncalled. The Georgian winger weaved into the Arsenal box and appeared to be pulled down by Jurrien Timber, with replays showing clear contact. Despite visible protests and online outrage, no penalty was awarded.
Clattenburg, part of Amazon Prime’s commentary team, weighed in on the decision. He suggested Kvaratskhelia exaggerated the contact, citing his arm movement as unnatural and indicative of simulation. The former Premier League referee added that the PSG forward’s dramatic reaction warranted a yellow card for dissent.
“I just don’t think it was a penalty,” Clattenburg said during the broadcast. “The referee is looking for a natural fall, and when a player throws up an arm like that, it’s often a sign of simulation. His reaction afterward—running straight to the referee—also merited a booking.”
