Manchester United have unexpectedly emerged as the leading contenders to sign Lille star Jonathan David on a free transfer this summer, with the forward nearing the end of his contract at the French club.
Ruben Amorim’s side has shown improvement in 2025 after a difficult start under his management, despite currently sitting 14th in the Premier League. Recent results include a commendable 2-2 draw at Anfield and a penalty shootout victory over Arsenal in the FA Cup.
Although Amorim’s system requires specific player profiles, United are expected to have a quiet January transfer window due to financial challenges related to PSR. Speaking on The Athletic’s podcast, transfer expert David Ornstein highlighted the situation, stating:
“It’s not like the walls are collapsing on their financial situation – it’s not great, clearly, they’ve got work to do. But I do think there is a bit of scope to do something [in the January window].”
Rather than splashing out, United could focus on cost-effective options. According to TuttoSport, the club is exploring a free transfer for Canadian international Jonathan David, whose contract with Lille expires in six months. David is reportedly seeking a new challenge, having scored 11 goals in 17 league games this season, along with four goals in five Champions League appearances.
Juventus is also interested in the 25-year-old, but United’s current position gives them a “golden opportunity” to outmaneuver the Serie A club. If Amorim manages to secure David’s signature on a free transfer, it would be a significant boost for United fans, especially given Liverpool’s past interest in the player.
In October, reports suggested Liverpool were ready to offer Lille €25 million for David, with manager Arne Slot being a strong admirer of the forward.
