Man charged with seven offences after allegedly driving into crowd at Liverpool title parade, police confirm

Merseyside Police have identified the individual involved in the incident that disrupted Liverpool’s Premier League title celebration.

At approximately 6 p.m. on Monday, a video circulated on social media capturing a car driving along Water Street in Liverpool’s city centre, striking several fans in the process.

Authorities later confirmed that a 53-year-old white British male had been taken into custody.

David Kitchin from the North West Ambulance Service reported that 20 people received on-site treatment, and of the 27 individuals transported to hospital, two sustained serious injuries.

On Thursday, police formally named the suspect as Paul Doyle, aged 53, from the West Derby area of Liverpool.

The BBC reported: “Merseyside Police have identified Paul Doyle, a 53-year-old man from West Derby, as the suspect in the Liverpool crash,” citing Chief Crown Prosecutor Sarah Hammond from CPS Mersey-Cheshire.

Doyle is facing the following charges:

Two counts of unlawful and malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm

Two counts of causing unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent

Two counts of attempted unlawful and malicious grievous bodily harm with intent

One count of dangerous driving

Assistant Chief Constable Jenny Sims urged the public to refrain from speculation, emphasizing the importance of allowing the legal process to proceed without interference. “We continue to support the 79 individuals injured, seven of whom remain hospitalized under NHS care. We hope those affected can heal and recover in time.”

She added that investigators are reviewing extensive footage from CCTV, dashcams, and other sources as part of the ongoing inquiry.

Paul Doyle is scheduled to appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Friday morning for an initial hearing.

The BBC noted that Doyle is a local businessman and father of three.

A neighbor shared with the BBC: “Late Monday night, I saw police all over the area and started to wonder if it could be him. I see him often walking with his sons and dog — he always seemed like an ordinary guy.”
