Liverpool are reportedly keeping a low profile as they explore the possibility of signing a new striker, with Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak emerging as their top target.
The Reds have been active in the transfer market this summer, securing deals for Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, and Milos Kerkez. At the same time, they’ve been linked with several players including Isak, Hugo Ekitike, Marc Guehi, and Viktor Gyokeres.
Isak, who netted 27 goals in 42 appearances last season, is believed to be Liverpool’s ideal signing. However, Newcastle are reluctant to sell, and any negotiation is expected to require a bid exceeding £150 million just to start talks.
Journalist Ben Jacobs recently spoke on The United Stand, suggesting Liverpool are closely monitoring the situation. He noted that if it’s confirmed that Isak is completely off the market, Liverpool would likely make a quiet approach for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike instead.
Ekitike, 23, is seen as one of Europe’s top young forwards, having tallied 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 matches last season. Jacobs explained: “Liverpool are essentially waiting to see if the door shuts on Isak. If it does, I believe they’ll quietly pivot to Ekitike.”
He also mentioned that while other Premier League clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal could be linked with Ekitike if their main targets fall through, none of them appear to be far along in talks, and the striker’s valuation would need to drop significantly for United to enter the race.
On the outgoing front, several Liverpool players—including Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliott, and Ibrahima Konate—have been linked with potential moves away from Anfield.
